🏆 DAY 24: Sending the follow-up email 🏆

It's important to get this right...we got you

Hello! As a quick reminder, our last post focused on how to politely and subtly ask for an internship/job at the end of a networking call. Today, we are talking about the importance of following up promptly after these calls.

Let's do it...

⚜️ Golden rule: you should be following up as soon as possible (and ideally within 12 hours) after every networking call ⚜️

🏆 3 things your follow-up email should do 🏆

  • Thank the person for their time and show your appreciation

  • Express specifically what you learned from the call

  • Move the process forward (if you discussed the possibility of an internship/job)

🏆 Sample follow-up 🏆

Part 1 of email:

“Hi/Dear [NAME OF PERSON WITH WHOM YOU SPOKE],

Thanks so much for talking with me earlier today. I really appreciate you making the time. I found the conversation to be fascinating, and I really enjoyed learning about your journey to [COMPANY NAME]. In particular, it was fascinating to learn about how you and [COMPANY NAME] are [EXAMPLE: “thinking about using social media as a way to reach a wider audience” -or- anything else you found interesting]. [YOU CAN ALSO ADD 1-2 ADDITIONAL SENTENCES HERE THAT ARE PERSONALIZED TO WHAT YOU LEARNED]."

Part 2 of email (2 possible options):

Option 1: if the person said they were willing to see if there might be an opportunity to intern/work at the company:

“Thank you very much for your willingness to see if there might be an opportunity for me to work at [COMPANY NAME] this [ADD TIME PERIOD WHEN YOU WANT TO START AN INTERNSHIP/JOB; example: “this summer”]. I’m attaching my resume, and please let me know if there is any additional info I can provide. Thanks so much, and I look forward to being in touch.

Sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]”

Option 2: if there doesn’t seem to be the possibility of an internship/job / you don’t want to work at the company, you can end with saying thank you. Here’s a sample ending to the email:

“Thanks again for such an insightful conversation. I look forward to being in touch.

Sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]”

Want more information on the follow-up email?... then check out this post. Tomorrow we will discuss what you may be asked in your interview– see you then!
