☎️ DAY 23: How to ask and see if a role is possible ☎️
Asking hurts no one!
Welcome back! In our last post, we shared questions you can use to ask the other person about their professional background and their company. Today we're diving into a topic people ask about a lot: how you can turn a networking call into an internship/job.
Let's go...

☎️ The Situation ☎️
You are 25 minutes through a call/Zoom scheduled to last for 30 minutes. The call has gone pretty well and you’re interested in interning/working at the company, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear next step...
☎️ The Solution ☎️
If you feel like the call has gone well enough (it doesn’t have to have been perfect!) and the person seems to have taken a liking to you and your situation, you can say something along the lines of:
“I’m really interested in you and the team’s mission, and I’d love to see if there might be an opportunity for me to contribute to the team as an [ADD ROLE OF INTEREST; ie: "intern"]. I totally understand if not, but figured I would ask.”
☎️ Likely Scenarios ☎️
If the person responds by saying they’ll look into it, you should respond by immediately saying “thank you very much” and expressing your gratitude for their willingness to help. You should also offer to follow up with a copy of your resume over email after the call.
If you do politely ask for an internship/job towards the end of the call and the person makes it sound like a firm no, you should still thank them for their consideration. Handle yourself with grace and be appreciative to have learned from them on the call... you never want to burn bridges
In the event that the person you’re speaking with seems doubtful that they can arrange an internship/job, but they’re still willing to give it a look, you should follow up with them in the same fashion (point #1 above) as if they optimistically said they’ll explore the possibility of the internship/job.
☎️ Additional Notes ☎️
Throughout the conversation, you can sprinkle in why you’re so interested in the person/their company. If relevant, connect your interest to your personal and professional interests and experiences. This will make it so that when you ask for the internship at the end of the call, it doesn’t feel like it is completely random.
You might do everything right and the person still can’t help you get an internship/job. You probably didn't do anything wrong, and you should remember that there is lots out of your control.
